Why Keto Isn’t Working for You (Even If You’re Doing Everything Right)

Frustrated with not getting results on keto?

If you found keto because you were tired of dieting, tired of being hungry, or tired of feeling like your body was working against you—you’re not alone.

And if you’re now thinking, “I’m doing keto… so why isn’t this working?” You’re also not alone.

Many people follow a low-carb or ketogenic diet by the book and still struggle with:

  • Stalled weight loss

  • Low energy

  • Persistent cravings

  • Inflammation or bloating

  • Feeling “off” despite doing everything right

The truth is this: when keto doesn’t work, it’s rarely because you’re failing. It’s usually because something deeper is being missed.

Let’s break this down.

Keto Does Work—But Not the Same Way for Everyone

Keto is a powerful metabolic tool.

When applied correctly and at the right time, it can:

  • Improve blood sugar control

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Support fat loss

  • Increase mental clarity and energy

But keto is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and it’s not just about cutting carbs.

If keto worked equally well for everyone, there wouldn’t be so many frustrated people saying:

  • “Keto worked at first, then stopped”

  • “I’m eating low-carb but not losing weight”

  • “I feel worse on keto, not better”

So, what’s really going on?

1. You’re Eating Low-Carb—But You’re Not in Ketosis

One of the most common reasons I hear people say "keto isn’t working” is that people are unintentionally stuck in metabolic limbo.

You may be:

  • Too low in carbs to feel energized

  • Not fat-adapted enough to burn fat efficiently

  • Constantly switching between fuel sources

This can look like:

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Cravings

  • Weight that won’t budge

Low-carb is not the same as ketosis. And ketosis isn’t just about carb numbers—it’s about how your body responds.

2. Your Metabolism Is Under More Stress Than You Realize

Keto can be incredibly supportive—but if your metabolism is already under strain, it can feel like it’s backfiring.

Chronic stress, under-eating, over-exercising, or years of dieting can all create a situation where your body prioritizes survival over fat loss.

In these cases, the body may:

  • Hold onto weight

  • Lower energy output

  • Increase cortisol (stress hormone)

  • Resist change—even on keto

This is why some people say:

“I’m barely eating and still not losing weight.”

That’s not a willpower problem—it’s a metabolic adaptation.

3. Hormones Matter More Than Calories

Keto works largely because it improves hormonal signaling, especially insulin.

But insulin isn’t the only hormone involved.

If keto isn’t working, there may be imbalances related to:

  • Cortisol (stress hormone)

  • Thyroid function

  • Sex hormones

  • Blood sugar regulation

When hormones are out of sync, the body doesn’t feel safe enough to release stored fat—no matter how “perfect” your diet looks on paper.

4. More Fat Isn’t Always Better

This one surprises a lot of people.

While keto is a high-fat diet, more fat does not automatically equal better results.

In some cases:

  • Excess dietary fat can stall fat loss

  • Fat intake may need to be adjusted based on metabolic health

  • Energy balance still matters—but differently on keto

This is where personalization becomes critical.

What works for one person can completely stall another.

5. Gut Health & Inflammation Can Block Results

Digestive health plays a much bigger role in metabolism than most people realize.

If you’re dealing with:

  • Bloating

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Food sensitivities

  • Chronic inflammation

Your body may be in a constant low-grade stress response, making fat loss harder and energy lower.

Keto can support gut healing—but sometimes the gut needs targeted support before keto can work optimally.

So… Is Keto the Problem?

Usually, no.

More often, the issue is:

  • Timing

  • Metabolic readiness

  • Lack of personalization

  • Missing foundational support

Keto is a tool—not a magic switch.

And when it’s applied without understanding what your body needs, it can feel frustrating instead of freeing.

Why This Is Exactly Where Coaching Helps

This is why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter keto plans.

Two people can eat the same foods, follow the same macros, and get completely different results—because their metabolisms are different.

In my 1:1 coaching, I look at:

  • Metabolic health

  • Stress load

  • Lifestyle factors

  • Digestive health

  • Readiness for ketosis

This allows keto to work with your body, not against it.
